There have been some tough times that have occurred this last year, not only for my family, but for members in our office. As a “law family,” we have had a divorce with children involved, a death of a loved one, and an illness of a close relative. These events transpired over a short time-span, and due to those happenings, I actually had to hire my own attorney for personal “stuff.” As attorneys, we never know what it is like to be “the client.” I can safely say that it is scary. It is not being in control, for the first time in my life. It is worrying about the unknown. It has made me a better person, and a better lawyer. I never realized that a great lawyer doesn’t just get great results. I could meet that challenge everyday. Lawyers are trained to be detached, and completely objective. These last few months made me change. I obtain better results, and I do care about my clients’ personal lives. I want to chat with them about home, or school, or their family. One of my civil clients, who became a dear friend, gave me a CD and a small book called Live Like You Are Dying. This simple song is how I now live life. If we all learn to talk sweeter, love deeper, and enjoy life like there is no tomorrow, we would be better people, and be better at our jobs…like lawyering.
